What should I wear?
Wear any clothing that you feel comfortable to move in. No special attire is required. Ladies are welcome to wear a skirt; however, it is not necessary.
For shoes, again, anything that you're comfortable in. Please avoid flip-flops or any other shoes which are not secure on your feet. Ideally shoes should have a little bit of slip on a hardwood floor. High heels are common for ladies, but you want to make sure the shoe is supportive and stable. If it doesn't have much holding your foot in, you may want to go with flats for now. However, we do encourage people to purchase dance shoes as this will assist your dancing. We have posted several links on the Links page above.
Do I need a partner?
No. We try to rotate partners periodically so that everyone has a chance to dance. Additionally, there may be others without partners.
What dances will we learn?
The team focuses on what are called the "big six" ballroom dances. They are the Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Cha Cha, Rumba, and Swing. We learn the American style of dance, as opposed to the International style, which is also very popular for exhibition and competition. However, we also may touch upon such dances as mambo, bolero and viennese waltz.
Do I have to compete?
No, you do not need to compete. While most of our members do enter into competitions there is no obligation to do so. You can come to the lessons, learn the dances, then just go out and have fun with it. That's really the point of it all.
What if I have two left feet?
You are still welcome! No dance experience or skill is required!
