Math & Science Panel 2006

On the 10th of March 2006, SWIMS (co-sponsored by Math Council) organized a panel focused on the experiences of women growing up, studying and working as mathematicians or scientists, followed by a catered dinner. Not surprisingly, there turned out to be quite a number of people at Bates and in the community interested in this topic, including President Hansen who joined the audience. We filled Muskie Archives with a diverse group of current Bates professors and alumni:

Anne Brown '88, MD, St. Mary's Hospital
Grace Coulombe '94, Director, Mathematical and Statistics Workshop
Holly Ewing, Assistant Professor, Environmental Studies
Becky Gilden, Mellon Learning Associate, Dean of Faculty's Office
Beverly Johnson, Assistant Professor, Geology
Sharon Kinsman, Associate Professor, Biology
Jennifer Koviach, Assistant Professor, Chemistry

The organizers of the panel Chrissy Anderson '06 (left) and math professor Bonnie Shulman (right) make sure that everything is ready.

A real evidence of the challanges that a woman has to cope with: Anne Brown had to choose between coming to our panel and staying at home with her little daugther. Thank you both for coming!

After the panel and the questions, we all sit down for a buffet dinner. While eating, the panelists continue dicsussions with interested members of the audience. In this picture, Bonnie Shulman (left) and Sharon Kinsman (center).

At a different table, (from left to right) professors Chip Ross, Caleb Shor, and students Chrissy Anderson '06, Zack Lapin '08, Nate Stambaugh '06, and Cassandra Kirkland '08 all enjoy another opportunity to interact together. The Department of Mathematics is famous for its excellent student-faculty relationships. All students starting from their first year at Bates can attend a Math Lunch traditionally held every Thursday, be involved in the Math Council and/or SWIMS, and are sometimes invited for barbecues at their professors' houses.

Thanks to Bonnie, Chrissy and Luciska who put this event together, and thanks to all the panelist who found the time and willingness to join us and share their experiences!
