Annual SWIMS Dinner 2006

On May 4th, 2006, we organized our annual SWIMS dinner in the famous Lewiston Thai restaurant Pepper and Spice. All members could invite another guest, so we ended up with an enjoyable company of 20. This included a balanced mix of males and females, professors and students, math and science majors, freshmen to seniors.

While waiting for their entrees, senior Nate Stambaugh (front left) and sophomore Cassandra Kirkland (front right) enjoy a little chat about women in math and science.

On the other end of the table, science students take the advantage of the opportunity to get to know each other.

Gabby Voeller (left) together with the other girls listens to the exciting ongoing converstation.

Josie Cutts, a first-year student perspectively majoring in mathematics, is happy to hear about the experiences of older students majoring in biology or chemistry.

First-year students and friends Mai Tuyet Hoang Ha and Razin Mustafiz (both in the background) share their feelings about Math Camp, a Short Term class taken by every Bates math major. Despite the intensity of Math Camp (it meets for 5 hours 4 days a week), they both like the challenge it brings.

Math professor Bonnie Shulman (right, not looking into the camera) during a thrilling conversation with a student.

Seniors Chrissy Anderson (left) from Boulder, CO and Stoyan Stoyanov (right) from Plovdiv, Bulgaria connect despite being from the opposite ends of the world. Only few weeks before graduation, they look back with nostalgia on the four years they have spent together at Bates.

Melinda Harder (center), another Bates math professor, talks to seniors Stoyan Stoyanov (center left) and Liz Sheridan Rossi (across the table).

Thanks to Bonnie for putting this event together!
