O'Malley, McGrail Earn Weekly Honors From NESCAC, ECAC
LEWISTON, Maine -- For the second time in the first three weeks of her college career, first-year forward Kate O'Malley of Deephaven, Minn., has been named New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's soccer Player of the Week. Also honored this week was junior tailback P.J. McGrail of Westwood, Mass., who was named to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) New England Division III Football Weekly Honor Roll.
O'Malley scored as many points in the past week as any other player in NESCAC has scored all season, tallying four goals and five assists for 13 points. She now has 11 goals and six assists for 28 points in the Bobcats six games, all wins. She tied a pair of school records this week when she scored eight points (three goals, two assists) against St. Joseph's College Sept. 25, and then when she distributed three assists in Bates' 5-2 overtime win over Babson College Sept. 29. In between, O'Malley notched the Bobcats' second goal in a 3-0 win over Tufts, the seventh- ranked team in New England, a team which had not been scored upon in its previous five contests. As a team, Bates has outscored its opponents 34-6.
O'Malley is a 1996 graduate of Minnetonka High School. She is the daughter of Charles and Mary Jane O'Malley of 4660 Spring Creek Drive, Deephaven.
McGrail was outstanding in Bates' 24-14 loss to Tufts. He carried the ball 19 times for 126 yards and two touchdowns. His success in the first half, when he had 112 yard on 14 carries, including TD rushes of 40 and nine yards, was instrumental in the Bobcats' establishing a 14-0 lead. He touched the ball just five times in the second half before leaving the game due to injury. This is the second time McGrail has been honored by the ECAC in his career, the first coming Nov. 4, 1995, when he rushed for 231 yards and had three touchdowns in a 33-29 Bates win over Bowdoin. He is also the second Bates player named to the Honor Roll in two games, joining senior linebacker Mike Holte.
McGrail is a 1994 graduate of Westwood High School. He is the son of Veronica McGrail and Steve Blume of 64 Bayley St., Westwood.
