Bonkovsky Scores 1,000th As Bates Women Down Thomas, 81-49
FARMINGTON, Maine Ð Senior captain Sarah Bonkovsky of Harvard, Mass., became the seventh female player in Bates basketball history to score 1,000 points as the Bobcats defeated the Thomas College Terriers in the first round of the Maine-Farmington Invitational tonight, 81-49.
Bonkovsky, a 5-11 center, reached the milestone when she hit a pair of free throws with 2:52 remaining in the game. She was the leading scorer in the game with 18 points on five-for-17 shooting, including three-for-six from 3-point range. Bonkovsky pulled down seven rebounds, and had three steals and three assists.
In their first game of the season, Bates dominated from the beginning, not allowing Thomas a field goal for the first nine minutes of the game to establish a 22-3 lead which they extended to 40-19 at halftime. The Bobcats will face the winner of the Maine-Farmington/Johnson & Wales game tomorrow at 3 p.m.
