Four Bates Soccer Players Earn All-State Selections

LEWISTON, Maine -- Two members from both the men's and women's soccer teams at Bates College have been named to the All-Maine first team by the soccer coaches of the Maine State Coaches Association. For the women, first-year forward Kate O'Malley of Deephaven, Minn., and senior midfielder Nicole Woodson of Walpole, Mass., were named, while two senior tri-captains, back Tom Murray of Marshfield, Mass., and goalkeeper Mike Marsh of Manchester, Conn., earned the honor for the men's team.

O'Malley was the only first-year player named to either team. A three-time New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Player of the Week, she was the primary scoring force behind the Bobcats' reaching the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championships. In the NCAAs, O'Malley scored three goals and assisted the fourth in the Bobcats' 2-0 road wins over Bowdoin and previously undefeated Williams. She set the Bates records for goals (18) and points (43) in a season. O'Malley scored twice as many goals as any other player in the conference. She has previously been named first-team All-Conference and second team All-New England.

Woodson was a co-captain of the 13-3-1 Bobcats' women's soccer team that finished among the top eight in the NCAA Division III tournament and tied the school record for wins in a season. She scored two goals and was second on the team with six assists. Woodson, who was also selected to play in the New England Women's Intercollegiate Soccer Association (NEWISA) Senior Bowl, ends her Bates career with five goals and 15 assists for 25 points. She was also named second-team All-New England.

Murray was a tri-captain of the 9-5-1 Bobcats' men's soccer team that reached the ECAC quarterfinals, Bates' first post-season berth in men's soccer since 1992. He was the top defensive player on the team. Murray, who plays in the New England Intercollegiate Soccer League (NEISL) Senior All-Star Game Nov. 24, scored one goal this season and ends his Bates career with two goals and one assist for five points.

Marsh was instrumental in the Bobcats' ECAC run. He had an 0.97 goals- against average and posted four shutouts, including three in a row against Colby, Husson and Bowdoin which earned him NESCAC Player of the Week honors Nov. 4 and gave Bates the Colby-Bates-Bowdoin (CBB) title for the first time since 1989. Marsh also had nine saves in the Bobcats' 2-1 win over defending NCAA Division III champion Williams College, the Ephs' first regular season loss since 1992.
