Bates Sweeps Weekly NESCAC Soccer Awards

LEWISTON, Maine -- Sophomore forward Stephen Coco of Auburn, N.H., and first year forward Kate O'Malley of Deephaven, Minn., have been named New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's and women's soccer Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 11.

Coco received the award for his performance in the Bobcats' 9-1 win over Thomas College on Nov. 9. In the first 25 minutes of the game, Coco picked up three goals. It was his second multiple-goal game of the season. The first was a two-goal effort Sept. 25 in the Bobcats' 3-1 win at Division II St. Anselm College.

The Bobcats, coached by George Purgavie are 9-4-1 this season and have earned their first-postseason berth since 1992. They˙˙˙˙˙˙`e first round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Wednesday at Connecticut College. Bates is 6-0-1 in its last seven games, and earlier this season handed defending NCAA Division III champion Williams College its first loss in its last 46 regular season games.

Coco is a 1995 graduate of Manchester Memorial High School. He is the son of Stephen and Diane Coco, 10 Maple Hill Rd., Auburn.

O'Malley, a three-time winner of the award, was the primary scoring force behind the Bobcats' reaching the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championships. Bates finished the season with a 13-3- 1 record, tying the single-season record for wins. In the NCAAs, O'Malley scored three goals and assisted the fourth in the Bobcats' 2-0 road wins over Bowdoin and previously undefeated Williams. She set the Bates records for goals (18) and points (43) in a season. O'Malley scored twice as many goals as any other player in the conference.

O'Malley is a 1996 graduate of Minnetonka High School. She is the daughter of Charles and Mary Jane O'Malley of 4660 Spring Creek Drive, Deephaven.
