1946 Bates College Glass Bowl Football Team To Be Honored
LEWISTON, Maine -- The only Bates College football team this century that went undefeated in the regular season, the 1946 Glass Bowl team, will be honored Oct. 12 in half-time ceremonies of the Bo :30 p.m. game with Wesleyan University.
Fifteen of the surviving members of the team that went to the first post season football game in Maine history 50 years ago on Dec. 7 will be presented with a plaque from the Lewiston-Auburn Sports Hall of Fame. The team was honored with the hall's "Fame" Team Award in April. The plaque will be presented by Milton Lindholm '35, hall committee member and dean emeritus of admissions at Bates. In addition, the team will receive commemorative replica jerseys from the college. After the game there will be a reception held for the team in the Benjamin Mays Center from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Also to be honored at halftime of Saturday's game are the 1996 recipients of the Department of Athletics' Senior Citation Awards. The Senior Citations are presented annually to Bates athletes who have performed exceptionally at the regional and national levels. Established in 1980, the awardees are nominated by their coaches and selected by the Department of Athletics. This year's recipients are four-time swimming All-American Melissa Sander '96, of Richmond, Calif.; two time NCAA qualifier in the hammer throw and shot-put Jon Eden '96, of Glenwood, Ill.; and three members of the first men's tennis team in school history to qualify for the NCAA tournament, Mark Erelli '96, of Reading, Mass., Jeff Poleshek '96, of Madison, Conn., and Dylan Stearns '96, of Brattleboro, Vt.
