Jackson Named Outstanding Field Performer at State Meet

LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College sophomore Walter Jackson of Hartford, Conn., was named co-recipient of the Frederick D. Tootell Memorial Award for the outstanding performance in the field events at the 1996 State of Maine Track Meet held April 13 at Bowdoin College in Brunswick.

Jackson took first place in both the shot put, with a throw of 46 feet, six inches, and the discus, with a heave of 133 feet, six inches. Both distances qualify him for the NCAA New England Division III Championships, held May 4-5 at Williams College. He previously earned All-New England honors in the shot put for the indoor season. Jackson is the eighth Bates athlete to win the Tootell Award in the last 10 years. Behind Jackson's performance, the Bobcats defeated rivals Bowdoin and Colby, 71-60-60, earning their first State of Maine championship since 1967.

Jackson is a 1994 graduate of Bulkeley High School. He is the son of Walter and Cynthia Jackson, 57 Pershing St., Hartford.
