Third Bates Weight Thrower Qualifies for Nationals
LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College senior Jon Eden of Glenwood, Ill., has become the third member of the men's indoor track team to qualify provisionally for the NCAA Division III National Championships in the 35-pound weight throw.
Eden joins juniors Sam Martin of Acton, Mass., and Spencer Potter of Waitsfield, Vt., in qualifying for the championships, to be held March 8 and 9 at Smith College in Northampton, Mass.
Eden qualified for the nationals on Feb. 17 at the NCAA New England Division III Championships with a throw of 50 feet, four inches. He finished in third place at the meet, earning All-New England honors. As a team, Bates finished eighth overall.
Marti, qualified for the nationals with a throw of 50 feet, 10 inches, winning the event at the Bates Invitational held Jan. 13. That meet was non-scoring. He finished fourth at the New Englands with a throw of 49 feet, two and one-half inches.
Potter qualified originally with on Feb. 3 with a throw of 50 feet, 11 inches, in winning the event at a quadrangular meet held at Bates. At the New England Championships, he finished second to earn All-New England honors, improving his qualifying mark to 51 feet, nine inches.
Eden is a 1992 graduate of Homewood-Flossmoor High School. He is the son of Clif and Anne Eden of 515 Arizona, Glenwood.
Martin is a 1993 graduate of Acton-Boxboro Regional High School. He is the son of John and Linda Martin of 16 Jefferson Drive, Acton.
Potter is a 1993 graduate of Westminster High School. He is the son of Spencer and Mary Jane Potter of Waitsfield.
