Bates Weight Throwers Qualify For Nationals
LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College juniors Sam Martin of Acton, Mass., and Spencer Potter of Waitsfield, Vt., have both qualified provisionally for the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships in the 35-pound weight throw. The meet will be held March 8-9 at Smith College in Northampton, Mass.
Martin, who recorded a throw of 50 feet, 10 inches, won the event at the Bates Invitational, held Jan. 13. The meet was non-scoring.
Potter qualified this weekend with a throw of 50 feet, 11 inches, winning the event. Bates won Saturday's quadrangular meet with Colby, Springfield and WPI. In the meet, Bates took the top four places in the weight and two of the top three in the shot put.
Martin is a 1993 graduate of Acton-Boxboro Regional High School. He is the son of John and Linda Martin of 16 Jefferson Drive, Acton.
Potter is a 1993 graduate of Westminster High School. He is the son of Spencer and Mary Jane Potter of Waitsfield.
