Bates Hoopsters Clean Up On Weekly Honors
LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College basketball enjoyed another round of accolades this weekend, this time from the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC), Maine College Basketball Coaches and Writers Association (MCBCWA) Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC). Junior center Sarah Bonkovsky (Harvard, Mass.) and junior guard Matt Garvey (Amherst, Mass.) were each named NESCAC Player of the Week. Bonkovsky was also named Holiday Inn ECAC New England Division III Player of the Week, while Garvey was named Player of the Week by the MCBCWA. Garvey and first-year guard Colleen McCrave (Walpole, Mass.) of the women's team were both named to the ECAC Weekly Honor Roll.
Bonkovsky, who last week earned New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) Player of the Week honors, continued her hot streak. After setting a Bates single-game record with 37 points in a 103-59 win over Colby-Sawyer, Bonkovsky added 18 points and 12 rebounds in a 90-58 win over Thomas. On the Bobcats' recent two-game road trip to New York, she scored 21 points and had 10 boards in a 65-53 loss to Skidmore, the fifth-ranked team in the New York region, and 18 points and 13 rebounds in an 87-60 win over Union. For the week, she averaged 23.5 points and 11.5 rebounds per game, while adding 11 steals and seven blocked shots. For the season, Bonkovsky leads the team with 8.4 rebounds per game and is second on the team in scoring, averaging 18.4 points per game.
Garvey had a stellar week, averaging 28.3 points per game for the Bobcats, the eighth-ranked team in New England Division III. In a 107-98 loss to Colby-Sawyer, Garvey tallied a team-high 35 points, including 10-for-16 from 3-point range, breaking his own record for 3-point field goals in a game. He had 19 points and two boards in the Bobcats' 80-74 win over Thomas. In Bates' next game, at Skidmore,
Garvey became the 19th player in Bates history and second this season to eclipse the 1,000 point mark for his career. Not surprisingly, point no. 1,000 came on a 3-pointer about eight minutes into the game. He ended the week with 26 points at Union, including another 5-for-9 from 3-point range. In the last four games, Garvey shot 24-for-49 from 3-point range, a .489 percentage. On the season Garvey is shooting 42-206 (.396) from behind the 3-point arc and currently leads the team in scoring, averaging 18. 2 points per game.
McCrave, last week's Maine Women's Basketball Coaches Association (MWBCA) Rookie of the Week, earned her ECAC honor by averaging 17 points, 10 steals, 7.7 assists and 5.0 rebounds in the Bobcats' three games of the week. That included a triple-double (17 points, 12 steals, 10 assists) against Colby-Sawyer, and a school-record 14 steals in one game against Thomas.
