Bates football players receive honors
LEWISTON, Maine -- Senior tight end Jared Libby of Clinton is the recipient of the Bates College football team's 1997 Robert P. Schmidt Award. The award is given annually to a member of the team who, in the judgement of the coaches, has best demonstrated exemplary physical or mental courage while bringing honor and achievement to himself and his team.
Libby played in seven of the Bobcats' eight games this season despite a painful leg injury. Despite this, he was third on the team with 15 receptions, while leading the squad with 20.1 yards per catch and four receiving touchdowns. He also had the team's longest reception of the season, a 57-yard touchdown catch against Williams College Oct. 5.
"What Jared did this season was remarkable," head football coach Rich Pardy said. "He never let his physical disadvantage affect his desire to achieve on the field. He was a leader for this team, in actions and in words. We had several injuries on offense, but Jared's determination and ability to persevere was inspiring to his teammates."
Libby is a 1993 graduate of Lawrence High School. He is the son of Joseph Libby, Clinton and Margaret Walker, Albion.
Senior fullback Steve Potamis of Melrose, Mass. and senior linebacker Jeff Sisto of Millis, Mass., are the recipients of the Bates College football team's 1997 Alan C. Goddard Award. The award is given annually to two members of the team, usually one offensive and one defensive. It is given in an attempt to measure where a young man was, and now is, in his football and personal achievement. Although he is being compared to other squad members, he is more closely being measured against himself. This award places an emphasis on an individual's personal achievement and his contribution to the total team effort. Potamis rushed for 57 yards on 20 carries from the fullback position this season. He also caught nine passes for 63 yards. For his career, Potamis rushed for 345 yards on 96 carries. "Steve continually expects to bring out the best in himself and his teammates," head football coach Rick Pardy said. "He was one of the most dependable and conscientious players on the team. He was always there for his teammates and really developed into a leader this season." Sisto was tied for first on the team in forced fumbles and tied for second in sacks. He was fourth on the team with 13 solo tackles. For his career, Sisto had 137 total tackles, 60 solo. "Jeff was a four-year letter winner for us, despite many setbacks," Pardy said. "This was his finest season. He grew into an important, solid, steady performer. Jeff knew his role on this team and we could knew we could count on him to fill it." Potamis is a 1993 graduate of Melrose High School. He is the son of Gerald and Eugenie Potamis, 43 Briggs St., Melrose. Sisto is a 1993 graduate of St. Sebastian's Country Day School. Senior linebacker Mike Holte of Marshfield, Mass. and senior quarterback Dan Hooley of Bristol, Conn., are the recipients of the Bates College football team's 1997 Garnet Gridder Award, given annually to the team's offensive and defensive most valuable players. Holte, the team captain, is Bates' all-time leading tackler. He led the team in tackles for four straight years, including 196, when he was named All- NESCAC by the conference coaches and All-New England linebacker by the New England Football Writers and the ECAC. This season he had 120 tackles, 24 solo. He led the team with six sacks, two fumbles forced and three fumbles recovered. For his career, Holte has 430 tackles, 183 unassisted. Everyone respected Mike, his coaches, his teammates and his opponents." Hooley holds or shares eight school records. This season he became the school's all-time leader in passing attempts, completions and yardage (349 completions in 845 attempts for 4,488 yards). His 1,468 total yards in 1996 were a single season record, as were his 148 completions and 320 attempts in 1993. Hooley also set single-game records for attempts and completions in a 24 for 55 performance against Tufts in 1993. "Dan has really matured in his four years at Bates," Pardy said.
