Historical NoteFrederick "Pat" Pettengill was born on August 29, 1909 in Pembroke, New Hampshire, and attended Bates College, graduating in the class of 1909. He worked for the YMCA in Keene, New Hampshire and Red Bank, New Jersey, and taught history and economics at Bordentown Military Academy, where he also managed the athletics program. In 1940 he earned his master's degree at the University of Pennsylvania. During World War II he served with the U.S. Air Force in the Mid-Pacific theater, and later served in the Korean War, retiring with the rank of lieutenant colonel. In 1946 he went to work for Syracuse University, first managing housing for veterans and later serving as resident administrator for Syracuse University's graduate centers in Poughkeepsie, Corning, Endicott and Rome. On June 21, 1952, he married Ursula Prater. He remained dedicated to Bates throughout his life, serving as the College Club president and recruiting students. He passed away on Nov. 24, 1986 and Pettengill Hall is named in his and Ursula Pettengill's honor. Ursula Prater Pettengill was born on Nov. 23, 1912 in Cowden, Illinois, the daughter of Arizona and Rachel Prater. She received her bachelor's degree from Indiana State University in 1940 and her master's degree from Kansas State University School of Home Economics in 1946. She served as director of food services for Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa from 1946 to 1949. From 1949 until her retirement in 1971 she served in the same role for Syracuse University. She passed away on February 14, 2010. Most of the material was given to Bates College by Ursula in anticipation of the 1999 dedication of Pettengill Hall, named in her and her husband's honor.
