Acquisitions Information

The Edmund S. Muskie Papers were deposited at Bates College in June 1980, when Muskie was named U.S. secretary of state. In 1985, several of Muskie's friends and former staff members, with assistance from the College, raised sufficient funds to support the renovation of the former women's gymnasium into the Edmund S. Muskie Archives building, which was dedicated in September of that year. Muskie's papers were formally donated to Bates College on April 23, 1986. Intellectual property rights in the unpublished writings of Edmund S. Muskie were given to the College in an addendum to the deed of gift signed December 8, 1989. The right to dispose of items from the collection was granted to the College by the Muskie heirs in 2007.

In 1994 and in 1996, Bates College received two shipments of records documenting Muskie's life since leaving public office which were maintained in his Washington, D.C. law office. A third accretion was received from the estate of Jane G. Muskie in 2005 and accessioned in 2006. Relatively small groups of files donated at various times by former Muskie staffers and others have also been integrated into the collection. Accession No.: 001-80-01, 001-86-01.

In 1970, the Democratic Party purchased 15 minutes of prime time television, and asked Senator Muskie to use that time to urge the American people to vote Democratic in a midterm election that was seen by many as a referendum on Nixon and his policies. The contact sheets and prints in these boxes, all by Maine photographer Tom Jones, document Muskie taping that speech in the Cape Elizabeth home of Maine frozen food magnate Gus Barber and family, as well as events the next day when Muskie voted then watched election results with family and supporters in Waterville, Maine.

Although he did not officially declare his candidacy for the Democratic Party nomination for the presidency until 1972, Muskie began an organized campaign for the presidency in 1969 or 1970. It is difficult to delineate what of Muskie’s activities from this time period constituted campaigning, but in general these images include events where he spoke to or interacted with large numbers of people, including at fundraisers. It is also difficult to delineate what activities were part of his 1970 campaign for senate reelection and what were part of his 1972 presidential bid; both are likely represented in these images. In 1970 or 1971, freelance photographer Burton Berinsky was requested by a national news organization to “stay close to Muskie”. Berinsky accompanied Muskie on many trips both nationally and internationally, and was granted significant behind-the-scenes access to the Senator and his staff throughout the campaign. The over 500 prints and proof sheets in this collection are the most complete visual documentation of the campaign.

Slides 1957-1991   16615.0 Items

Scope and Content

This subseries comprises mostly 35mm color slides taken by Muskie, who was an avid photographer. Muskie also enjoyed doing slide shows for his friends, and he spent a great deal of time organizing and labeling the slides and carousels.

The subjects covered in this subseries tend toward the personal, rather than the professional, and include his children, holidays, an annual cribbage tournament he held with college friends, and travel. Dates range from the 1950s through the 1980s.

The subseries also contains a small number of 120 mm slides which were apparently not taken by Muskie.

Arrangement

Most of the slides in this subseries were arranged by Muskie into magazines of 36 or fewer slides, which he numbered chronologically. The structure and order of the magazines was retained, although the slides were removed from the actual magazines for preservation purposes.

Slides at the end of the subseries were not organized into numbered magazines, but were grouped as indicated in the notes.

35mm Slide Magazines (each contains approx. 36 slides)
