Historical Note

Charles Franklin Phillips served as Bates fourth President, from 1944 to 1967. Phillips guided the College into the post-war years, continuing to expand the academic offerings and the faculty, and placing more of an emphasis on business and economic training for students. Phillips also oversaw the creation of the "Bates Plan of Education," which continued to emphasize the centrality of liberal arts education during a student's academic tenure. The campus physical presence also grew, as some fourteen buildings were added.

Scope and Content Note

The Charles F. Phillips papers are composed of personal material related to Phillips and his wife, Evelyn, as well as his professional material unrelated to his tenure as Bates College president from 1944-1967. For the official records of Phillips's presidency, see CA02.06, Bates College Office of the President, Charles F. Phillips Records.

Included in the collection are: copies of Phillips's many articles about economics, marketing, business and other topics; other writings, including an unpublished book manuscript; photographs from before, during and after his life at Bates; items related to the Phillipses' extensive travel to places such as Europe and India; correspondence with family and friends; and his diaries.

Organization and Arrangement

The collection is organized into six series: I. Diaries, II. Correspondence, III. Photographs, IV. Writings, V. Personal and professional material; and VI. Travel.
