Historical Note

Annie Louise Merrill (Hayes) was born on February 17, 1880 to Stephen T. and Harriet A. (Hodgkins) Merrill. She attended Bates College, graduating in 1902. Following college, she taught school in her hometown of Gardiner, Maine and Natick, Massachusetts. On October 16, 1907, she married James Austin Hayes and relocated to Pennsylvania, where the couple had two children, Merrill Bemis and Helen Augusta. Throughout her life, Hayes maintained close relations with her alma mater, serving as class of 1902 secretary, a reunion leader, Alumni Fund represenentative, and as the founder, Secretary-Treasurer, Vice-President, and President of the Philadelphia Alumni Association. She received the Bates College Distinguished Service Award in 1959 for her many efforts.

The collection includes correspondence, school records, photographs, and other material related to Annie Merrill Hayes (class of 1902), such as photographs of Bates dormitory rooms, theater productions, social activities, and graduation during Hayes' time at Bates. The collection also includes information about class of 1902 reunions and alumni activities in which Hayes was involved.
