Guide to the Norman Ross photography collection, ca. 1890s-ca. 1999

Historical Note

Norman Ernest Ross was born in Kennebunkport, Maine on August 7, 1898, the son of Ivory Stone and Florence Benson Ross. After graduating from Biddeford High School in 1917 he entered Bates College but left to serve as a director of the Student Army Training Corps at Worcester Polytechnic Institute during World War I. He returned to Bates and received his B.S. degree in physics and mathematics in 1922. Following graduation Ross spent two years as a teacher and coach at the high school in Brandon, VT. In 1924 he was appointed assistant bursar at Bates and in 1928 became bursar and superintendent of grounds and buildings. He was named treasurer in 1963 and upon his retirement in 1968, was awarded an honorary master of arts degree.

Norman and his wife, Marjorie Pillsbury Ross,'23, married in 1924 and lived at their 32 Frye St. home for about 70 years opening it to visitors and students. Active in the community, Norman was a long time board member of Central Maine Medical Center and the Androscoggin Savings Bank. Marjorie's community involvement included helping to establish the Twin Cities Community Chest (now the United Way), the Women's Literary Union and the Women's Legislative Council of Augusta. The Rosses were long time members of the United Baptist Church of Lewiston and served in several capacities. Marjorie Ross died on February 20, 1999 and Norman died on June 30, 2000.

Scope and Content Note

The collection contains photographs of Norman Ross, his wife Marjorie Pillsbury Ross, family members and friends including many from the Bates College community. Contains photographs chronicling Norman's years following high school including his service with the Student Army Training Corps and his participation in several sports as a Bates College student. Also includes numerous informal photographs of and with family and friends, including a trip to Mt. Katahdin, hunting trips, snowshoeing, outings to the beach, dinners and celebratory events such as birthdays, anniversaries and Norman's honorary degree from Bates; many of the photographs are unidentified. Other material includes memorial tributes to several Bates alumni, correspondence and news clippings concerning various events involving family, friends and the College.
