Esther Rosenthal Zellweger, known professionally as Esther Mechler, attended Bates College, where she spent her junior year abroad in Geneva studying with psychologist Jean Piaget. At the time, it was unusual for Bates students to travel overseas to study abroad. She received her B.A. degree in 1964 and her Master's and Sixth Year degrees in education from The University of Rochester. She began her career in education, but has been involved with the animal rights/animal welfare movement since the 1970s. Zellweger has been particularly active in the prevention of pet overpopulation. In 1990, she founded SPAY/USA, a national referral service for low-cost spaying/neutering. As of 2005, it is considered to be the largest spay/neuter advocacy and referral program in the world.
The collection contains memorabilia, travel literature, correspondence, photographs, and other material related to Esther Rosenthal Zellweger's 1962-1963 junior year abroad in Geneva, Switzerland. Zellweger, a member of the Bates class of 1964, studied abroad at a time when it was still unusual to do so. She collected numerous travel brochures, tickets, maps, postcards, and other keepsakes from throughout Europe, which are preserved in the collection.
