Historical Note

Meredith "Pete" Burrill was born on December 23, 1902 in Houlton, Maine to Fred and Carrie Odiorne Burrill. He attended Bates College where he excelled at track and participated in the choir and glee club. He graduated in 1925, and then attended ClarK University, where he received an M.A. and Ph.D. in geography. Beginning in 1926, he taught in colleges and universities including Farmington Normal School, Lehigh and Bucknell universities, Oklahoma A&M, and Southern Methodist University. For 40 years, from 1933 to 1973, he was executive secretary of the Interior Department's U.S. Board on Geographic Names. In 1927 he married "Nellie" Bannister '24, and she died in 1978. He later married Betty Didcot Burril. He died on October 5, 1997.

The collection contains material collected by Meredith F. Burrill (class of 1925) while he was a student at Bates College. It includes photographs, clippings, ephemera, tuition bills, transcripts, and other material related to his time at Bates College, and in particular, his participation in track, theater, and music.
