George W. Bryant graduated from Bates College in the Class of 1953, where he completed an honors thesis entitled "Causes of the Anglo-Boer War, 1899-1902." Bryant came into contact with Stephen Rich in the fall of 1952 during his research process. Dr. Stephen G. Rich was a former instructor at a school in the city of Durban in Sourth Africa from 1916 to 1920. Rich referred Bryant to Anthony de Wet, a fellow professor in Durban, who lived in the Cape of Good Hope as a boy. Bryant also contacted Sidney Lake, a long-time friend of Rich, who fought in the Boer War as a soldier in the Transvaal army. After graduating from Bates, Bryant went on to study at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.
This collection consists primarily of letters wrtten by Stephen Rich and Anthony de Wet to George Bryant regarding the Boer War in South Africa in the early 1900s. A letter from Sidney Lake to George Bryant and several miscellaneous items are included in the collection as well. Some of the major subjects in the letters are South Africa society during the Boer War, causes of the war, discussions of Communism and capitalism, and certain important figures of the war in South Africa. Bryant completed his honors thesis at Bates College on the Boer War in 1953, and much of the material was generated or compiled during and shortly after that process.
The collection is arranged in chronological order.
