Historical NoteA longtime professor of Latin at Bates College, Fred Austin Knapp was born on December 9, 1872 in Haverhill, Massachusetts. He graduated from Bates College in 1896 and received an M.A. from Harvard University in 1902. He served as an instructor in Latin and Mathematics at the Nichols Latin School and in several faculty roles at Bates, including Assistant in Chemistry and Physics from 1896 to 1897, instructor in English and Latin from 1897 to 1898, and instructor in Latin from 1898 to 1901. Following his graduate studies at Harvard he returned to Bates as a professor of Latin, a position which he held from 1903 until 1943. On August 26, 1896 he married Carrie Florence Southwick and they had two children together. Because of his long acquaintance with Bates College, Knapp maintained close relationships with four college presidents along with countless faculty members, and became the unofficial biographer of many of these people as he was often called upon to write tributes on their behalf. Knapp died in Lewiston, Maine on May 20, 1960.
