Robert M. Chute was born February 13, 1926 in Naples, Maine. His father ran a summer hotel in Naples. After graduating from high school, Chute attended the University of Maine at Orono, majoring in Zoology. He later attended the John Hopkin's School of Hygiene and Public Health. He taught in California, Vermont, and Pennsylvania before coming to Bates College, taking the position of head of the Biology department in 1962. He retired in 1992.
Chute is an accomplished poet, and along with his wife Virginia, has been a strong activist for peace. He has published in both areas, often through the Cider Press, which he operated.
The collection is composed of typescripts of drafts for The Small Pond, a literary magazine published by the Cider Press which Chute operated. Also includes correspondence with contributors and typescripts of their work; copies of Plowshare, a peace newsletter edited by Chute and his wife Virginia; typescripts for Lucky Shots by Chute; and two binders of Chute's photo collages. Also includes issues of The Small Pond Magazine of Literature, which continued The Small Pond, but was not published or edited by Robert Chute.
Arranged alphabetically and then chronologically.
The collection is open for research.
