Historical Note

The first intercollegiate athletic contest involving Bates College was a baseball game against Bowdoin in 1872. Football followed in 1875, although it did not become officially sanctioned by the College until 1889. Track and field, and numerous other sports followed into the twentieth century.

Women's athletics has a long history at Bates, but only at the intramural level until the creation of a varsity field hockey team in 1966. Throughout the first half of the twentieth century, the Women's Athletic Association organized athletic events for campus women, but discouraged outright competition.
