Historical Note

The earliest student organizations at Bates were the Polymnia and Eurosophia literary societies, formed shortly after the founding of the school. Founded "for improvement in writing and speaking," these two groups were joined by a third similar society, Piaeria, before the end of the century. Gradually these societies became more like social clubs, featuring music and other entertainments. By the early 20th century, interest in these clubs was waning, resulting in their disbanding in 1914.

A variety of other clubs had risen to take their place, however. Clubs were formed around a number of student interests, such as music, languages, sports, and numerous honorary academic societies. By the 1930s there existed over two dozen clubs, societies, groups, and other organizations, including some that continue to this day: Outing Club, Quimby Debate Council, Robinson Players, and the Lawrance Chemical Society.

Clubs and organizations continue to play an important role in the life of Bates students, as evidenced by the more than 50 such groups in existence today.

Scope and Content Note

Contains records pertaining to the activities of various student organizations at Bates College. The collections within this sub-group are limited in size, and are shown in the finding aid below. Larger collections have been given their own sub-group each, to aid in arrangement. Those organizations include the Outing Club, the Debate Council, and the Modern Dance Company. Likewise, student publications are described in a separate sub-group (CA 12.03), with a link provided in the Related Material section below.

Organization and Arrangement

The files are arranged into series alphabetically by organization name, excepting the "single-folder organizations" records at the beginning of the collection. These "single-folder" boxes contain organizations for which only single or a few items exist. In all cases, records for individual organizations should not be considered complete, and there are many organizations for which no archived records exist.

Scope and Content Note
The Bates Athletic Association was established in June, 1880, to control the activities of the various Bates College athletic teams. The precursor to the Athletic Association was the Baseball Association, created in 1874. In 1903 a faculty-led Advisory Council (later the Advisory Board) was created, after the student-led Athletic Association had run up debts of $1,600. The Athletic Association remained active through the 1930s, when it's authority was gradually transferred to the Athletic Department. The Women's Athletic Association was created in 1905, and remained active until around 1969.
The records contain programs, correspondence, articles, ledgers, clippings, histories, statistics, rosters, and financial records relating to the activities of the Association and the Advisory Council, particularly with regard to various individual sports. Of note are the records of the Women's Athletic Association, especially the annual athletic demonstrations sponsored by the group.
In addition, the "Athletic Exhibition programs" folders contain programs for a number of Athletic Association-sponsored events, including Field Day, the Gymnastics Exhibition, and the Indoor Track Meet.

Scope and Content Note
This organization was created at Bates circa 1878, and was known as the Bates College Student Christian Association, or often just Christian Association. By 1892, there were separate organizations for men and women, although it is unclear whether they existed at an earlier date. The two groups existed separately until 1936, when they were merged, becoming known as just the Christian Association. At this time the Council on Religion was also disbanded, having been formed earlier to coordinate the activities of the two groups. In 1964 the name was changed again, to the Campus Association. The organization existed under this name until disbanded in 1993.
It should also be noted that this group maintained strong ties to the Young Men's (and Young Women's) Christian Associations, and undertook a variety of outreach and charitable activities in the surrounding communities as a part of these ties. Records for the Bates YMCA and YWCA are included in this series.
