Historical Note

Bates College faculty and staff have organized a diverse set of clubs and groups over the institution's existence. Most of the groups were formed as discussion and social clubs, a chance for people to form tighter bonds with their peer groups. The Bates Round Table, a discussion group of faculty and staff, and the Bates Needle Club, for female faculty, staff, and spouses, were two such long-standing clubs. This collection also contains the records of the Bates chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, a faculty-administered organization.

Scope and Content Note
The Bates Round Table was formed in October, 1896, by Professors A.W. Anthony and Addison Small, for "the cultivation of the social and literary talents of its members." These members included the faculty and select staff of the college, and their spouses. Regular meetings were held, at which talks were given by members, followed by discussions and socializing. Often guest speakers were brought in to talk to the group. By the administration of President Phillips, attendance at Round Table meetings was compulsory for faculty members. The Round Table appears to have disbanded sometime around or after 1969.
These records include correspondence, programs, treasurer's and secretary's ledger books, and several typewritten addresses given by members. The "Program Materials" folder contains several invitiation cards to meetings, as well as a handwritten account of an undated meeting.

Scope and Content Note
The Bates Needle Club was a social organization comprised of faculty wives and female faculty members. The earliest mention of the club is in an edition of the Bates Student from 1910, but there are no actual club records until 1946. The club appears to have disbanded sometime after 1972, although there is an item in the "Programs, 1963-1973" folder for a proposed meeting of a "Bates Women's Club" for September 1973.

Scope and Content Note
The Bates College chapter (Gamma of Maine) of Phi Beta Kappa was established in 1916. (Although the folder "Secretary's correspondence" contains an 1879 letter from national secretary John K. Lord granting Bates the 'beta' chapter of Maine, pending approval of the chapter at Bowdoin College, there is no further mention of why Bates was not actually granted a chapter until 1916.)
This series contains correspondence, annual reports, membership details, publications, and other information about the Bates chapted of PBK. Of note, the secretary's book contains a historical retrospective leading up to creation of group on its first few pages.
There is also some correspondence relating to the creation of the chapter in CA 02.04, President George C. Chase records.
Organization and Arrangement
The records are arranged alphabetically by folder title.
