| Abstract |
This collection consists primarily of assignment sheets and
syllabi used from 1946-1959. Additionally, it contains newspaper
and journal articles on the program and correspondence from
Professor Roy P. Fairfield about the program and some of the
materials he donated to this collection. |

Historical Note
The Cultural Heritage Program program was created in 1946 as a
set of courses designed as the capstone to the general education
phase of the Bates Plan, a post-war curriculum development
requiring every student to study a broad variety of subjects,
regardless of major. It was required of juniors and seniors, and
comprised of four semesters of courses which focused on the study
of historically important books, documents, and artwork in order to
fill in knowledge gaps among general education subjects of the
Bates Plan. It was colloquially known as "Cultch".
