Historical Note

Courses in philosophy and in religion have been taught at Bates since its founding as Maine State Seminary in 1855. Courses in religion were eventually taught in the Cobb Divinity School (founded in 1887), while philosophy became a separate department. The Philosophy program eventually included courses in psychology, art interpretation, and "history of education and pegagogy." Religion became a separate department when Cobb was disbanded in 1908, and its instructors and courses were merged into the college. Philosophy and Relgion were merged into one department in1968.
