Historical NoteThe earliest history course taught at Bates was a Biblical History course, from 1863 (and taught earlier at the Maine State Seminary). In 1870, classes in general history began to be offered, and the program became a department in 1897, as the Department of History and Political Science. History became its own department in 1901.
