Historical Note

German classes have been a part of the Bates curriculum since the college's founding, with classes offered to upperclassmen only through the nineteenth century. In 1892 German became a part of the Modern Language department, or program of instruction. Instruction in German became its own department around 1901. Language instruction was reorganized in 1968, and German was taught as a part of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures. In 1990, language instruction was altered again, with the creation of the German, Russian, and East Asian Languages and Literatures Department. A 2006 reorganization resulted in the current designation, German and Russian Studies.
