Historical NoteClasses in botany, ornithology, and zoology constituted the first academic offerings in the biological sciences at Bates, dating to the founding of the college. By the late 19th century, these classes were organized under a Biology Program, but a fully organized Department of Biology was not created until around 1902-1903, under the direction of Professor Fred Pomeroy.
