Various types of committees exist at Bates, most of which are
represented in these records. Committees of faculty, staff,
students, and combinations of all three operate regularly, as well
as ad hoc and temporary committees.
This collection contains records from a variety of student,
faculty, staff, joint and ad hoc committees at Bates College.
Records include correspondence; reports; meeting minutes and
meeting books, including excerpts from faculty meeting minutes;
event programs; publications produced by committees; newspaper
clippings and assorted resource material.
The collection is organized into five series: Honors Committee;
Academic Standing Committee; Committee on Investments in South
Africa; Priorities Committee; and Single-folder Committees.
Records are closed to researchers for
20 years from date of creation. Consult Archives staff for more
information.
The collection is the physical property
of Edmund S. Muskie Archives and Special Collections Library. Bates

|
The Academic Standing Committee has several
responsibilites: to recommend to the faculty policy concerning
academic standing, probation and dismissal, and related matters of
the grading system; to hear on appeal individual cases of students
placed on probation or dismissed by failure to meet legislated
criteria for good academic standing; to hear petitions for
readmission from students once academically dismissed; to report
statistical summaries concerning academic standing to the faculty
after the close of the fall and winter semesters; in conjunction
with the Educational Policy Committee to recommend to the faculty
policy concerning registrations and the assignments of credit; to
hear on appeal individual petitions concerning irregular
registrations and credits; and to review the administrative
exercise of specified authorities as delegated by the committee to
the dean of students and the associate dean of students according
to faculty legislation. |

The Student-Faculty Committee on Investments in
South Africa was established by President T. Hedley Reynolds. The
purpose of the committee was to gather information about apartheid
and American corporate interests in South Africa; to consider

individuals; and to recommend a moral course of action for the
College to take with its investments in corporations doing business
in South Africa. |
