The Bates College News Bureau was founded in 1921 as a way to publicize the Million Dollar Fund, a Bates fundraising drive during the 1920s. The founder and first director was Wayne E. Davis '12. The Bureau was given further impetus by the Bates debate trips to Oxford around the same time, and quickly became the principal publicity agent for the college. The department's name was changed in 1994 to the Office of College Relations, and again in 2003 to Communications and Media Relations.
Contains clippings scrapbooks and foldered clippings put together by the Bates College News Bureau. The scrapbooks contain clippings on a wide variety of topics related to the college, under the headings "General," "Athletics," and "Debate." The foldered clippings cover various college events and other topics. The clippings are mostly from Lewiston and other Maine newspapers, but some are from the New England area, in particular Boston newspapers. See also individual series notes for more detail.
This collection is arranged into four series. The first three series are arranged by title of scrapbook: I. General; II. Athletics; III. Debate. The scrapbooks are arranged chronologically within each series. The fourth series, IV. Clippings, is arranged chronologically.
