The Bates College News Bureau was founded in 1921 as a way to publicize the Million Dollar Fund, a Bates fundraising drive during the 1920s. The founder and first director was Wayne E. Davis '12. The Bureau was given further impetus by the Bates debate trips to Oxford around the same time, and quickly became the principal publicity agent for the college. The department's name was changed in 1994 to the Office of College Relations, and again in 2003 to Communications and Media Relations.
