Historical Note

The Nichols Latin School was created as a college preparatory school in 1868, after the Maine State Seminary became Bates College. The Latin School was sponsored by the College until 1899, when, with the need for college prep schools on the decline, it was closed.

Scope and Content Note
This series contains two items. The first is a single-page letter from I.F. Frisbee, wherein some of the activities of the school are described. It is unknown to whom the letter was addressed. The second item is a receipt for $12 paid to O.H. Toothaker, for an advertisement in the school catalog. The receipt is also signed by Jonathan Y. Stanton.

Scope and Content Note
This series contains issues of the school newspaper, first titled the "Nichols Echo," then changed to "Latin School Echo" sometime after 1886. The publication for each year is given a volume and an issue number, however, only one issue was apparently published each year.
