Historical Note
The institution now known as Bates College began life in 1855 as
the Maine State Seminary. Oren Burbank Cheney, the driving force
behind the creation of the Seminary, became the school's first
'principal' that year as well. Only when the Seminary became Bates
College in 1864 did Cheney adopt the title of President, a position
he retained until retirement in 1894. He was succeeded by George
Colby Chase, an 1868 graduate of Bates. Chase oversaw impressive
growth and change at Bates, tripling the number of students, and
served as President until his death in 1919. His successor, Clifton
Daggett Gray, guided Bates through two dynamic decades, dealing
with the Great Depression and World War II. He retired in 1944,
turning the reins over to Charles Franklin Phillips, who would
serve until his own retirement in 1966. Phillips instituted the
Bates Plan of Education and presided over a number of post-war
building additions to the campus. Bates' fifth President was Thomas
Hedley Reynolds, who oversaw perhaps the most dramatic time of
change and development on campus, including changes to the physical
landscape, and elimination of much of the structure and regulations
that separated men and women on campus. Reynolds retired in 1988,
and was succeeded by Donald West Harward. Harward's tenure was, to
date, the shortest of any Bates President, as he retired from the
position in 2002. During his presidency, Harward placed greater
focus on off-campus study, community involvement, and student's
senior thesis. His successor, and the current President, was Elaine
Tuttle Hansen, a former Provost and Professor of English at
Haverford College.

Scope and Content
Note
This collection contains catalogs, flyers, reports, event
programs, booklets, and brochures documenting a variety of
information regarding the administration of campus-wide special
events at Bates College. Administrative records include annual
President's Reports, the Bates Blue Book, and general catalogs for
the College and its subsidiary Schools. Special events include
Class Day, Commencement, Convocation, Ivy Day, and the All-College
Gala. Note that this sub-group does not contain the records of
individual presidential administrations. Instead, these can be
found in their own sub-groups (see the Related Materials
section).

The Bates College Catalog is an annual publication
containing information on the administration, academics, and
personnel of the college. For a brief time, separate editions of a
Freshman Catalog and a Summer School Catalog were also printed.
Note that beginning with the school year 1903-1904, and for all
years thereafter, the General Catalog was printed as an issue of
the Bates College Bulletin. The same applies for each copy of the
Freshman and Summer School catalogs. This subseries contains issues
of all three catalogs. |

|
These records contain programs, brochures, flyers,
honorary degree citations, correspondence, histories, and reports
concerning a variety of special annual events at the College. These
events include commencements and baccalaureates, convocations, Ivy
Day, Class Day, and the all-college Gala. |

Scope and Content Note |
|
|
Class Day seems to have started in 1868, and was a
day of celebration for each graduating class, marked by speeches
("orations"), poems, processions, and the lighting of the
ceremonial Peace Pipe. In the beginning, Class Day was usually held
the day after graduation, but this appears to have changed by the
early 1880s, when it was held a day or two prior to graduation
exercises. The form of Class Day changed little over the years, but
the content remained largely the same: a variety of readings,
consisting of poems, speeches, a Class History, and a Class
Prophecy. The popularity of Class Day waned over time, however, and
the last one was apparently held in 1967. |

Folders contain event programs as well as a number
of invitations to the Class Day events. For some years, folders
labeled "Class Day Parts" are also found, and these contain the
speeches and readings given for particular years. |

Traditional convocations are usually held at the
beginning of the school year and feature a program of music and an
address by the president or a guest speaker. Related to convocation
is Founder's Day, begun by President Gray in 1925 to pay tribute to
the memory of the College's founders and to recall its beginnings.
Other convocations have been held for special events such as
building dedications, anniversaries of the College's founding, the
bestowal of honorary degrees and to explore the relationship
between business and education. |

|
Ivy Day began in 1878, as a serious event at which
the junior class honored the outgoing senior class with the placing
of a plaque above an ivy plant on a campus building. The event grew
into something of a party as the years went on, leading to its
cancellation in the early 1970s after some campus pranks got out of
hand. Restarted some years later, Ivy Day continues to the present
day, as a senior class activity and part of Commencement
activities. This subseries contains programs and invitations.

Dancing on campus was banned until 1922, and
shortly thereafter a traditional Sunday (later Saturday) night
dance event was started. This event lasted in various guises for
decades, until it gradually lost favor among the students. This
subseries includes programs for dances such as the Ivy Hop,
Carnival Hop, Lambda Alpha Tea Dance, and various class (Sophomore,
Junior, Senior) events. Many of the dance cards in this sub-series
that predate 1922 were held off-campus. The earliest one was held
by "Ye Jollie Club" in 1885 at the Trinity Rectory, location not
specified. |

Scope and Content Note |
|
|
For most of its history, the Presidents of Bates
College have issued annual reports documenting the state of affairs
of the administration, student body, and any other aspects of the
college that they saw fit to report. During President Cheney's
tenure, these reports were published as an Address of the President
to the Corporation, or governing body of the college. Beginning
with President Chase, they were issued as annual reports, and
usually contained annual reports from other administrative officers
of the college. Starting with the 1903-1904 year, each report has
been published as an issue of the Bates College Bulletin, excepting
the Reynolds reports from 1974-1975 to 1989, and the Harward
reports from 1990 to 1996-1997. Please note that there are no
annual reports for the years 1979 to 1988. |

The Bates Blue Book was a handbook issued to
students which contained the rules and regulations -- academic as
well as social -- of the college. It was first issued in 1915 as
the Regulations for the Administration of Bates College with a
browncover. With the 1927-28 issue, the cover was changed to a blue
one, and in 1930 the booklet was retitled as the Bates Blue Book,
which was retained for the remained of its published history.
Following the 1969-1970 academic year, the information contained in
the Blue Book was published as the Student Handbook by the Dean of
Students office (see CA 04.01 for copies of these issues). Also
included in this subseries are undated copies of Bates College
General Regulations, which possibly predate the Regulations for the
Administration of Bates College. |
