Abstract This record group contains meeting minutes for the Board of Trustees, Board of Overseers, and directors of the Maine State Seminary, the various governing bodies of Bates College through its founding to the present.

Historical Note

The Board of Trustees acts as the governing body for Bates College. With the establishment of the Maine State Seminary in 1855, the body was created as the "Board of Trustees and President of Maine State Seminary" at that time, to consist of no fewer than 25 persons. The structure was changed in 1868 with an amendment to the College charter, into a bicameral body with a "Board of Fellows" and a "Board of Overseers." In 2004 the Board was revised into a unicameral body.

Scope and Content Note

These records contain bound copies of the meetings of the Bates College Board of Trustees and Board of Overseers, as well as the meetings of the directors of the Maine State Seminary, covering the years 1855 to 1964. In addition, there is a folder of loose records from Board meetings during the 1920s, which includes the records of a number of votes and resolutions, as well as various committee reports and letters.
