Installing the Cyrillic Fonts for Windows XP
   
  1. Open Regional and Language Options in the Control panel.
   
  2. On the Languages Tab, under Text services and input languages, click Details.
   
 
 
  3. Under "Installed Services", click Add.
   
   
   
4. Select Russian from the "Input Language" dropdown list and click OK.
 
   
 
  5. Once you have completed these steps, you will notice a blue "EN" (standing for English) in the lower right corner of your computer screen. If you click on it, you will see the new Russian option you just added. Once you are in an application such as Microsoft Word, select the Russian option and begin to type.
     
   
 
 
Installing the Cyrillic Font for Windows 2000
 
  1. From the Control Panel, open the "Regional Options" setting.
 
  2. Click on the General tab.
 
  3. Within "Language Settings for the System" click on Cyrillic and then click OK. Once you have completed these steps, you will notice a blue "EN" in the lower right corner of your computer screen (as shown in the XP directions above). If you click on it, you will see the new Russian option you just added. Once you are in an application such as Microsoft Word, select the Russian option and begin to type.
 
 
Installing the Cyrillic Font for Windows 95/98/ME
   
  1. From the Control Panel, go to "Add/Remove Programs" and then to "Windows Setup"
 
 

2. Click on "Multilanguage Support" and then on the "Details" button.

   
  3. Select "Cyrillic Language Support" and then click OK. The Cyrillic fonts should then be installed and you will need to restart your computer.
   
  4. After your computer restarts, select the "Keyboard" option from the Control Panels.
   
  5. Select the "Language" tab and then click the "Add" button.
   
  6. Choose "Russian" from the list and click OK. Once you have completed these steps, you will notice a blue "EN" in the lower right corner of your computer screen (as shown in the XP directions above). If you click on it, you will see the new Russian option you just added. Once you are in an application such as Microsoft Word, select the Russian option and begin to type.
 
 
Setting up Netscape to View Sites in Russian

To view Web Sites in Russian, you must first install the Cyrillic fonts on your computer (see above). Once installed, you can configure Netscape to use these fonts when necessary.

 

  1. While in Netscape, go to the Preferences option under the Edit menu.
   
  2. Under Appearance, select Fonts
   
 

3. Click on the "For the Encoding" button and select Cyrillic.

   
   

   
  4. Make sure that Cyrillic fonts are selected for both Variable and Fixed width fonts and click OK. If they are not selected, simply select them from the font menus. Next click on the button which states "Use my fonts, overriding page-specified fonts". Click OK.
   
   
   
  5. You can test these fonts by visiting a Russian Web site such as http://www.gazeta.ru/. You should be able to view these pages in Russian.
   
  6. If you visit a site that you know is in Russian yet your browser is displaying nonsense characters, select the Character Set option under the View menu and select Cyrillic. Sometimes the browser does not recognize that it should display a Cyrillic font, and choosing the Character Set will help it to do so.
 
   
 
 
Setting up Internet Explorer to View Sites in Russian
To view Web Sites in Russian, you must first install the Cyrillic fonts on your computer (see above). Internet Explorer should already be configured to automatically use the correct fonts when needed. To check, try the following:
 
  1. While in Internet Explorer, go to the Internet Options under the Tools menu.
   
 
  2. Click on the Fonts tab at the bottom.
   
 
  3. Click on the Language Script bar, and select Cyrillic. Make sure that a Cyrillic Font displays.
