Ingeniux CMS Tips: Adding Publish-as Names, Teasers, and Intruders

Publish-As Names:

Each ICMS page is automatically assigned an x no. as its unique address [x489.xml]. The page can be accessed by this number in all browsers. We also encourage assigning a “friendly or publish-as name” for particularly the higher-level pages, for ex. x489.xml has the publish-as name: for-students.xml. Please use this format: all lower-case letters, with dashes to separate words.

Good examples:   Bad examples:
campus-tour  campustour
bates-now  bates-now.xml
bates-daily  BatesDaily
monthly-calendar  monthly calendar

To assign the publish-as name:

  • In the Content Store, Right click on your page,
  • Choose Properties,
  • Click on the System Attributes tab,
  • Type in the Publish-as name in the box, check expand on publish,
  • Click OK

Note: If you decide at a later time to delete the page and build a new one, you can give it the same PublishAs name as the old one. But you would not be able to give it the same X-number! If you copy a page, please be sure to change the copy to a different publish-as name.

Teasers:

Teasers are also components that need to be constructed before adding to the page. There is a ready-made selection of teasers in the Teaser folder under Shared Internal Components that may contain what you need. Click and drag any of the appropriate teasers into the Teaser-1 or -2 boxes. Teasers are easy to make, and thus are ideal for announcing timely information, events, or deadlines. Once a teaser is built, you can simply reuse them by typing in new information, or construct new ones as needed.

If you choose to craft a new teaser:

  • Right click on the teaser folder (or your components folder),
  • Select new, component,
  • Name = one or two words appropriate for topic,
  • Type = use pulldown to choose either internal or external teaser.
Let’s start with internal teaser:
  • Type in the “headline” or description of the teaser which becomes the hot link,
  • In the second box, type in the text that will briefly explain the page,
  • In the third box click and drag in the page from the content store that the teaser is linking to.
  • Save the teaser and check it back in.

For the second teaser box , let’s add an external teaser. Remember the external link has to be created before it can be part of the Teaser.

  • Right click on the External Link folder (or a subfolder), choose new, component, external link
  • Type in the headline and then text for teaser,
  • Drag in the new external link (like ex. above) into the External Link box,
  • Save the new link and check it back in.

Return to your original page (that these teasers will now be a part of), and drag the new teasers into Teaser-1 and -2 boxes. Save your page, then preview and test out the new links.

You can add more teasers or other components to your page, under tools, add special, elements, type = component, gear symbol, and type in the name exactly – including the number Teaser it is adding, ex. Teaser-3

Intruders:

The intruder is a spot on the Subsite Home Pages for static, graphical information or promotion. Generally we use it to present a personable, human face on the page. But you can use it for any visual message about your subsite; depict a classroom or research scene, show off your high-tech equipment, depict a famous speaker who you sponsored, whatever. Intruders can be static or they can randomly load from a set of choices. [But they are not a slide show.] Intruders must be hotlinked to a page with more information.

By default, Bates OCMR will provide you with your choice of student profiles, faculty profiles, or a mix. OCMR will build you a custom intruder by request to jcollier@bates.edu, or you can build your own by following the instructions at http://abacus.bates.edu/webguide/elements/intruders.html

Located under Bates Internal Components, Intruders, there are image files of ready-made Intruders. Click and drag the selected Intruder List component (“student-1” or “faculty-2”, etc.) into the Intruder box on your appropriate page.
Save the page, check it in, and mark it for publish.

Always remember to Save, Preview, Check-in, and Mark for Publish all pages and components ready to go live!

Terrific examples of live subsite home pages that employ Intruders, Teasers, and Publish-as names are the gateway pages, off the Bates homepage, ex. FOR PARENTS - http://www.bates.edu/for-parents.xml FOR ALUMNI http://www.bates.edu/for-alumni.xml, etc.

Please remember that not all page types will make use of Intruders, Rollovers, or Teasers.
Banners and other graphic design elements should be used/created in consultation with OCMR.
Please be sure to refer to the webguide http://abacus.bates.edu/webguide/for additional policies and practices.
