ILS: WEB: DEVELOPMENT > CMS > ACADEMIC PAGES

The Academic department pages have content that is generated from the College Catalog providing certain standard navigational links: (A.) Coursesand Academic programs, and contact information for the Faculty of that department or program. Additional informational pages can be added to both the faculty sections and the (B.) custom pages.

There are two basic styles of display for the faculty listings, one with titles, etc. and a biographical introduction with a link to "More about..." additional pages such as the Anthropology Faculty; and the other type has a page with photos of the faculty members, where the images are the links to their additional pages, such as the Sociology Faculty.

To construct the Academic Department web pages:

Locate the department or program name in the Content Store.

Pages and content can be added to each of the folder categories listed: Syllabi, Faculty Bios, Components, Custom Pages, and Teasers.

Each faculty member needs to have a Faculty Bio page (see instructions below), and have that page dragged in the FacultyList page
in alphabetical order. If a new member's page is needed to be inserted between those already listed, it is necessary to drag each one in again to maintain alphabetical order.

Generic pages with content such as curriculum vitae, etc. may be added as children of the faculty member's page.

In order for the link to "More about Loring M. Danforth"to appear on the faculty list page, the Bio_Intro: (A) must have a brief entry - usually calling attention to the faculty members specialties in their field.

(B) Bio: is the content section of the "More about..." page, much like the body copy on a generic page and contains additional biographical information, and/or links to internal Bates pages or external links.

(C) Degree and Institution: fields will display like a subtitle on the "More about..." page, each one separated by a semi-colon.

(D) Photo_Exists: and the fields related to permission to use need to be Y or N depending on what type of faculty list the department has chosen or if the faculty member wants a thumbnail photo to appear on the right sidebar of the "More about..." page.

Interview and Foreign language fields are not changed at this time.

Navigation-Page: is generally set to siblings to see the other members of the department as left-hand links to their biographical pages.

Navigation-Links: a link group component may be dragged into this field for additional left hand links after the siblings.

(E) FacQuery: The url will always appear in this field to the =. It is **important** to fill in the faculty member's username, exactly as it appears in the directory (without the @bates.edu).

(F) Layout: Only the page type FacultyBioPage.xsl will work to create the page needed to drag into the FacultyList.

[A few fields are not shown in between the 2 screen shots.]

In order to have the thumbnail picture style for faculty listing display, the Area Coordinator or Dept. chair should let OCMR know that this is preferred, and that pictures have been taken (by an OCMR staff photographer) and successfully uploaded to CMS.

Web staff will change the Faculty page under Departments and Programs to indicate yes to thumbnails (no is the default).

Faculty bio pages to be added the same as described in the text listing style above to the FacultyList page. The link to their Bio: information page will be the thumbnail picture, rather than the "More about..."

Be sure to:

  • Save and check-in each page and component
  • Mark for publish all pages. This can most easily be accomplished by right clicking on the parent page FacultyList and choose mark for publish - page and children.
  • Publish all pages and children, highlight bateswebsite, click incremental
  • If new pages or updates do not appear after these steps have been done, publish the department name parent and children (ex. right click on Anthropology, publish, page and children, highlight bateswebsite, click incremental)
