Glossary of Terms Used in Bates CMS Web Work:

Some terms are linked to additional descriptions. Be sure to consult the "How to" guide for more detailed instructions.

BodyCopy - Where the text, images, etc. can be added or dragged and dropped, or copied and pasted from other programs. Copying and pasting from existing web pages to include links, or background shadings, the xml page needs careful previewing in a browser to be sure of what coding has been copied. This section is HTML sensitive.

BodyCopySupplement - Where right side text and images add sidebar information. Adding and editing done similarly to BodyCopy section, it is also HTML sensitive.

Breadcrumb - a navigation trail that is a hierarchical display of the ancestor path to a page, ex. About Bates > Campus Tour > Campus Housing > Frye Street Houses > Hacker

Check in - Folder/Page/element is saved and changes made when last checked out; available for previewing but not editing

Check out - Folder/Page/element is open to editing by page author/editor

Components - Navigation, teasers, rollovers - parts of the page not in the BodyCopy or BodyCopySupplement that need separate handling, and can be dragged and dropped from the content store onto the current page being worked on. Components are reusable.

CMS - Content Management System, currently we use the Ingeniux brand CMS.

Content Store - Where the "tree" of Bates sections and components can be viewed and selected for work. [Remember that the site file structure is actually flat, the hierarchy represents what is stored in the Reference File.] Names of all published pages in the Content Store should be upper case only.

Divider page - a transition page type that is usually a list of links

Elements - Images, links, or items to be added as components of the page

Gateway Page - Some are the same as divider pages, such as the For Students or For Faculty gateway; others lead to whole subsites (e.g., For Alumni or For Parents)

Generic page - Most content below the primary section or subsite home pages; navigation and style set by the style sheet for the subsite

Intruder - An image from the Faces at Bates archive, added to body copy, with link to additional text about the person, etc.

Keywords - Where identifying terms or metatags can be easily added, for enhancing the accuracy of search engine results

Link Groups - Pages on internal and external links that will add left hand subsite navigation to pages.

Mark for Publishing - readies the page to be approved, and then published. Pages that are not marked for Publish are not visible in the navigation. They can be made visible in the preview, however, by checking "show all pages"

Navigation - Set by the style sheets for global and subsite references - done by the redirector for pages on abacus. Left hand navigation can be added by creating Link Groups, then adding that page as a component to another page.

Ancestors - Primary pages and section pages above on the tree
Children - Pages below on the tree
Siblings - Pages at the same level of the tree

Page Type - Refers to the schema, for ex. the Divider Page type is a page made with the Divider Page Schema. Other page types include primary, gateway, and generic.

Permissions - refers to who has authority to read/write/edit/publish a page, as well as the ability to assign pages to others, change system settings, etc. These capabilities are set by an administrator.

Preview - After saving the created or edited page, under File, click on Preview or, use the Preview icon on the task bar to see a simulation of how the page will look in a browser. NOTE: that most hotlinks will not work in Preview mode. Choose different USER AGENTS to see simulations of different browsers. Click "show all pages" to view both published and unpublished pages in the navigation.

Primary Section Page - Homepages that introduce the major branches of the Bates site (only 9 made: About Bates, Academics, Admissions, Student Life, Offices, Bates Now, Supporting Bates, Parents Gateway, Alumni Gateway)

Publish - makes the page "live" for all to see - this is happens after you have marked a page or component for publish.

PublishAs Name - The preferred unique name for each page, always in lower case, with dashes between words as needed. Pages without PublishAs names are referred instead by the x-number (see below).

Publisher - The page creation and editing space in iCMS. Reference File - The file that contains all the information which makes up the Content Store (reference.xml)

Rollovers - Text that is added as explanation when mouse rolls over the navigation link on the left hand side of page. Only required on pages that are in the left hand Page navigation of the homepage or Primary Section Pages.

Schema - The list of elements on a particular page. For ex., the schema for the Generic Page consists of Page Navigation, Ancestor Navigation, BodyCopy, BodyCopySupplement, etc.

Style Sheets - Defines what a particular set of pages will look like in HTML.

Subsite Generic Pages - Most content below Subsite Homepages

Subsite Home Pages - Introductory pages to mini-sites within the Bates site, ex. OCS, the Library, or college offices

Teaser - A unit that consists of a headline and text field, plus a link that leads to more information.

Tree - See: Content Store

Workflow - the process for publishing, where assignments can pass from writer to editor to administrator (project and/or office specific)

Xnumber - Another way of identifying unique pages in the browser, ex. x605.xml Pages without PublishAs names are assigned the X-number as their URL, for ex. http://www.bates.edu/x605.xml
