ILS : SOLVE > SOFTWARE

Installation - Is this available on the network or do I need to call the Help Desk? What does it mean that my program has performed an illegal operation, and shut down all on its own?

  • Supported Software
  • Software Installation
  • Always disable virus protection, and shut down all other programs before installing new software
  • When installing new software, try one application at a time, that way if there are problems, it will be easier to determine the cause (usually the last thing installed)
  • Downloading from the internet is not advisable - not necessarily compatible with our network setup

Basics - when an application is not acting the same as the last time you used it, quit and start again, even restart the computer, and start fresh to see if the quirks have gone away.

  • Has it ever worked correctly, if yes, how did you access the application, from a shortcut or from the program files list on a pc or the hardrive on the mac? Best to try launching from the direct source, not a desktop shortcut.
  • Use keyword searching in the applications help to troubleshoot
  • Try our workshops or open labs for assistance with software
  • We have tutorials for specific software applications supported at Bates.
  • Element K online tutorials for staff to not only use for learning the application, but also the help sections
  • Converting or swapping files between Macs and PCs - save as plain txt, or pc format or may require the use of an intermediate program like Mac Link Plus, or Conversions Plus, available at the Help Desk
