BATES COLLEGE: INFORMATION & LIBRARY SERVICES > POLICIES

Fair Access to Network Resources

Information and Library Services (ILS) network administrators monitor the Bates network to assure that network services are available to all.

In accordance with the College’s Computer Use Policy, we work continuously to identify computers using more than their fair share of the Bates Internet connection and take steps to limit their impact on others. When necessary, we develop a list of “top users” whose use is interfering with the work of others. This is what we do with the list:

  1. We contact users on the “top user” list informing them that their use is in violation of the Computer Use Policy, and that they must take corrective actions to reduce their Internet use.
  2. We expect users to take whatever steps are necessary to reduce their Internet usage. Users may contact Help Desk Services at 8222 for assistance in removing programs or reducing their impact on the Internet. If users continue to appear on the list of top users, we send a final warning by e-mail.
  3. If we get no response to the final warning, we will limit the Internet capacity available to each user’s computer. The limit will remain in effect until the user takes corrective action and e-mails ILS network administrators at: netadmin@bates.edu.

The Information Services Advisory Committee (a faculty-staff-student committee) has endorsed this approach.
