WHAT IS THE BANNER INFORMATION SYSTEM?
Banner is an administrative software application developed specifically
for higher education institutions by SunGard SCT
(formerly Systems & Computer Technology Corp).
The Banner system consists of six
integrated modules, Student, Financial Aid, Finance,
Advancement, Human Resources and General. The system is
highly integrated with all modules sharing a common secure
database. Multiple departments throughout campus enter and
use the information in Banner, facilitating the maintenance
of the colleges shared data and minimizing redundancy.
With this common database we are able to ensure the integrity
of students records from admission through graduation
and beyond as an alumnus, as well as maintaining all other
financial and administrative records.
The current release of Banner, version 7, is completely web-based and accessible to authorized users at
http://banner.bates.edu.
ACCESSING BANNER 7:
To access Banner simply enter banner.bates.edu in the
address line of your browser (Internet Explorer is recommended).
Enter your ID and your Banner password (leave database blank) and press Enter.
The first time you launch Banner 7, a new JInitiator file will automatically download to your PC. This takes a couple minutes so
please be patient. Subsequent connections will be much faster.
In Internet Explorer, to avoid inadvertently closing your Banner session, you must go
into Tools/Internet Options…/Advanced and uncheck "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts."
If you run into problems launching Banner 7, please contact Help Desk Services at ext. 8222.
If you have specific issues within your particular Banner module, please contact your designated support person.

Banner Documentation:
The the Banner Documentation Bookshelf is
available at http://banner.bates.edu/docs/bdox7x/bkshlf7x.pdf,
and also when you are logged in to Banner, in the My Links section on
the right.
This is supplied by SCT and is the best source of
information on the many features of Banner, and on how to get started
using Banner. This documentation library is very thorough. Even
if you are an experienced Banner user, you may
find in it a wealth of information that you never knew about what you
can do
with Banner, and what Banner can do for you. A good place to begin is
in the SCT Banner General section, the Getting Started Guide,
and the User Guide, Chapter 1 Overview.
The bookshelf is in PDF format and requires that
Adobe
Reader be locally installed. Upgrading to the most recent version
of
Adobe Reader will allow you to use the search
features of the Bookshelf.
Banner Basics Online Tutorial:
SCT has
provided an on-line tutorial.
It is a little bit funny, but does have some useful information, especially for those who may be fairly new to Banner.
