Overview
Buildings on the Bates network are connected via fiber optic cable running at 1 Gigabit per second. Computers are connected to the network via twisted pair ethernet. Each station is connected to a 10/100 Megabit switched port. TCP/IP and Appletalk are routed throughout the network.

Students have access to multiple file servers for storage, class use and web space. Services can be accessed through campus computer labs, various classrooms and from all dormitory rooms.

Other features include...
- Web based class registration and grading through Garnet Gateway
- Private class discussion lists
- Incoming detection and virus prevention on the server level
- State-wide dial-in internet access through Bates

Maintenance
All network services at Bates College must receive maintenance at regular intervals, during which services will be unavailable. Announcements will be made through email before scheduled maintenance is to occur.
