Migrating from Netscape Mail

Installing and configuring Thunderbird as your secure email client involves these required steps:

1. downloading and installing the application on your computer;
2. downloading and importing into Thunderbird the Bates College Certificate Authority (CA);
3. configuring Thunderbird to receive your email by means of IMAP over SSL.
4. remove Netscape from your computer

The below instructions guide you through step 1: downloading and installing Thunderbird on your computer;

1Download and Install Thunderbird

Download the correct version of Thunderbird for your operating system at http://www.mozilla.org.

 

 

Double click the setup icon to install the program (accompanying screen shots refer to a Windows XP installation).
   

Select Next from the Thunderbird Setup dialog box.

  • Accept the license agreement and select Next.
  • At the Setup Type dialogue box, accept the Standard setup, which is the default installation type, and click Next.
  • Accept the default Location, and click Next to complete the installation.

 

When installation has been completed, select Finish from the Install Complete dialog box.

Accepting the default setting to launch Thunderbird for the first time allows you to import details from your old email client.

 

Thunderbird's Import Wizard will detect your system's email clients. To import the settings and data from Netscape Mail 6 or 7, select the radio button labeled Netscape 6, 7 or Mozilla 1.x.

Click Next.

 

 

 

You will be prompted when the import process has been completed. Click Finish.
1Download and Install Bates CA Certificate
Now that you've installed the application you need download
and import into Thunderbird the Bates College Certificate Authority (CA).

Go to the Public-Key Cryptography page at: http://abacus.bates.edu/ils/offices/web/crypto

Right click the link Certificate Authority (CA) and select Save Link As. . .

When prompted save the certificate file (bates_ca_cert.pem.cer) to your Desktop
To install the certificate, open Thunderbird
  • From the Tools menu, select Account Settings.
  • Select Security
  • Click Manage Certificates.
  • Select the Authorities tab from the Manage Certificates dialog box.
  • Click Import.

  • Locate and select the file bates_ca_cert.pem.cer from your Desktop.
  • Click Open

On the Downloading Certificate dialog, click to check:

  • Trust this CA to identify web sites
  • Trust this CA to identify email users
  • Trust this CA to identify software developers

Click OK to finish downloading;

Click OK to close the Certificate Manager;

Click OK to close Account Settings.

1Configuring Thunderbird to receive email by means of IMAP over SSL

Open Thunderbird

  • Under Tools menu: select Account Settings
  • Click on Server Settings
  • Select: Use secure connection (SSL)
    (port changes to 993)
  • Next to When I delete a message:, change the selection to Move it to the Trash Folder
  • Deselect:
    Clean up ("Expunge") Inbox on Exit
    Empty Trash on Exit
  • Click Advanced...

 

Make the following changes to the Advanced Account Settings:

  • IMAP server directory: mail/
  • Deselect:
    Show only subscribed folders
  • Click OK (to close Advanced Account Settings pop-up window)
  • Click OK (to exit Settings)

 

 

 

1Remove Netscape from your computer:
Install Firefox as your web browser first!

  • Be sure to close Netscape (browser and email)
  • Disable the quick launch in the task bar or system tray by right clicking
  • Open Control Panels > Add/Remove Programs > Netscape
  • Click Remove
  • Restart the computer

You're now ready to use Thunderbird.
