Monday April 10th 2006 The 8th issue of our zine, E-clectic, marks the end of our 4th year in publication at Bates College. Our first and last member of the Editorial Board graduates this spring. We congratulate Natalia Tsai ‘06 on a job well done. Thanks for four years of service on E-clectic. Mt. David Summit 2006 Once again, the zine covered the Mt. David Summit on March 24th. In this zine zone there are photos of students presenting posters and papers from student research. As a special treat, we have some of those papers here in the current issue. Students: Eric Williams ‘06, Anne Tiernan ‘06, and Mutiara Stillman ‘06 publish their papers on The Rhetoric of Alien Abduction. From the panel on Memory and the Holocaust, Marian Goddard ‘07 presents her paper on girl survivors of the Holocaust. The paper, as well as a video clip of her presentation at the summit, is featured in E-clectic. A Good Cause: from Film Documentary to Fundraising Vanni Thach ‘06 made use of her Phillips Fellowship to travel to Cambodia and produce a documentary about the genocide there. Now she is raising money to fund a Cambodian orphanage with the sale of her Dvd. The zine supports this endeavor and has provided a video clip in this issue to help encourage all members of the campus community to learn more about the genocide. Currently, the zine will not feature this documentary on its pages so that Vanni may raise money for her cause.
Fiction E-clectic introduces you to short story writer, Martha Stevens-David, who works at Bates in the Museum of Art. Martha is a published, "modestly stated," short story author who has over 100 short stories in her collection about life in a small Maine town called Mainely Memories. She comes from the county of Aroostook and her hometown is Ashland. We are pleased to include two of her previously unpublished stories: Summer Camp and The Bear. Our second short story writer, Katy Reedy ‘06, returns with two new selections of fiction. During her Bates career, Katy Reedy has published a number of poems and short stories in E-clectic. Poetry What would E-clectic be without Poetry? As you watch or listen to Beyond Words, read along with the poems from Marian Goddard ‘07, Laura Burns ‘08, and Megan Hamilton ‘06. College staff also contribute to our poetical selections: Martha Stevens-David and Wiebke Lohfeld, a Resident Learning Associate from Germany, share some of their poetry. Off Campus Study: Photographs and Research We are delighted to present photos and papers from students who have had the opportunity to travel around the world and conduct research in Japan (Adam Gemus ‘06), Greece (Sarah Mengel ‘06), The Czech Republic (John Phelan ‘06), Chile (Andrea Wolf ‘06), Taiwan (Natalia Tsai ‘06) and France (Jessica Dumas ‘06). Essays and Class Papers In addition to the Off Campus Research and Mt. David Summit papers, the zine offers a piece of non-fiction by Thomas Wesson ‘09 and another FYS 234 paper from Rachel Salloway ‘09. A selection of papers from Atsuko Hirai’s First Year Seminar 234: The U.S. Relocation Camps in World War II have been included in E-clectic during each of the last three years.
