2008 Performance Series

Open to the public July 14 to August 9, 2008

Season Overview

Join us for the 26th season of the Bates Dance Festival. Experience the power and invention of contemporary dance and music. Whatever your dance interest, our 2008 series which features works by world-class choreographers and imaginative newcomers will entertain, intrigue and inspire you.

Chris Aiken & Angie Hauser by William Frederking

This season we showcase works by the established and emerging dance makers from at home and abroad introducing our community to innovative approaches to art, technology and contemporary issues.

From the witty, provocative and physically virtuosic works of Keigwin + Company, to the conceptually exquisite vision of  Zoe Scofield & Juniper Shuey, to the politically charged commentaries of Victoria Marks and Zimbabwean choreographer, Nora Chipaumire, to the subtle beauty of South Africa dancemaker, Gregory Maqoma  -- these gifted creators bring their finely crafted and deeply considered perspectives to our stage with grace, humor and eloquence. In these challenging times of global change and promise, it is often through the work of artists that we discover new ways to make sense of our experiences and find solace and hope.

Keigwin+Company by Tom Caravaglia

We at the Festival, remain dedicated to insuring critical support for the artists' creative process by taking an active role as commissioners and producers of new works. To that end each summer we gather an international community of choreographers, performers, educators and students to study, perform and create new work. Through this community the Festival encourages a creative exchange of ideas among artists and offers audiences a wide range of opportunities to experience contemporary dance, thus affirming the essential power of art to enrich our lives. I welcome you to this vibrant gathering where the spirit of dance continues to thrive.
