2014 Season Preview

Schaeffer Theater, Bates CollegeJoin us this season as we enter our fourth decade of presenting world class contemporary dance. This summer we invite you to enjoy vibrant performances in the comfort of our intimate, air-conditioned Schaeffer Theatre. Whatever your dance interest, our 2014 series, featuring works by acclaimed choreographers and imaginative newcomers, will entertain, intrigue and inspire you.

Our 2014 season serves up a enticing array of works -- from a journey of the heart with Prometheus Dance in Heart of the Matter, to the humorous and biting satire of Camille A. Brown & Dancers in Mr. Tol E. Rance, to a rousing and poignant exploration of the punk/rock era in David Dorfman Dance's Come, And Back Again and the profound and artful exploration of cultural and political repression with Vincent Sekwati Mantsoe in Skwatti and Yin Mei in Dis/Oriented-- these astute artists bring conviction, curiosity and brilliant dancing to our stage. Our Different Voices concerts showcase new works by international and emerging choreographers while our ever-popular annual Musicians’ Concert and Moving in the Moment offer up the rich rewards of artistic collaboration among our community of artists in residence. Enriching these main stage events our weekly Show & Tell and Inside Dance pre-and post-performance talks provide a wealth of insight on the artists and their work.

Here at the Festival, we are dedicated to insuring critical support for the artists' creative process by taking an active role as commissioners and producers of new works. To that end, each summer we gather an international community of choreographers, performers, educators and students to study, create and perform. Through this community, the Festival encourages a creative exchange of ideas among artists and offers audiences a wide range of opportunities to experience contemporary dance, thus affirming the essential power of the arts to enrich our lives. Welcome to this vibrant gathering where the spirit of dance continues to thrive.

I look forward to seeing you in the theatre this summer!
