Most of the highly competitive fellowships will require that selected applicants meet with a committee for an interview. This is your opportunity to expand on your application by discussing your plans for the fellowship and beyond, as well as your qualifications.
Preparing for the interview:
• Attend an OCS Interview Training Workshop (check eRecruiting calendar
for times).
• Review the materials you have submitted so that you are ready to explain everything that they have received.
• Review the fellowship materials so that you are clear on the foundation’s mission and requirements.
• Critically analyze how your skills, experience, and interests fit into the purpose and guidelines of the fellowship.
• Create a short list of topics that you wish to get across to the interviewers before you leave. Memorize this list so that you an insert items during your conversation.
• Schedule a mock interview through the Office of Career Services (call 786-6232 for an appointment).
• Create extra copies of your application materials to bring along to the interview.
• Pick out an ‘interview smart’ outfit.
• RELAX and be yourself. You have been selected for this interview because they know that you are a qualified and compelling candidate. Now you just have to prove what they already assume.
During the Interview:
• Keep your answers succinct and get to the point.
• Don’t be afraid to say “I don’t know” or ask for further clarification. It is better than making up an answer when you do not understand exactly what they are asking you.
• Have questions prepared for the interviewer or panel.
• Remember the importance of body language (open posture), eye contact,
and tone (sound engaged, interested, and interesting!). See the interview
guide for more information
• Check the particular scholarship/fellowship foundation’s website for interviewing
information and specifics.
