Crime Statistics

Statistics in the crime categories below represent criminal activity officially reported to Bates College Security and Campus Safety as defined by the National Incident-Based Reporting System Edition of the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, and as required under the Higher Education Act of 1965 as amended by the Student Right-to-Know and CAMPUS SECURITY ACT (public laws 101-542, 102-26, 102-325, and 103-208). The following statistics reflect criminal activity that was reported between September 9, and September 22, 2001.

Liquor Laws/Policy Violations

9-09-01 - Security went to Hacker House to check the building and discovered a party in the basement. Earlier a party at that location had been shut down due to blue-slip violations. A second keg of beer was confiscated. The students in attendance became verbally abusive and refused to leave the basement. The Lewiston Police Department was called to assist Security in dispersing the students. The students finally left the area after the Police Department warned them that they would be arrested for disorderly conduct. As mentioned in the 9-14-01 Campus Safety and Security Report, three arrests were made. The Dean of Students Office was advised of this incident.

9-14-01 - A student at Hacker House had a bottle of hard liquor confiscated. The student was referred to the Dean of Students Office.

9-15-01 - A bar was discovered in the common area of the suite at John Bertram. The students were told to remove the structure. They were referred to the Dean of Students Office.

9-15-01 - A student was summonsed by a Maine State Liquor Inspector for possession of alcohol by a minor behind Clason House. The student was also referred to the Dean of Students Office.

9-15-01 - Another student was summonsed by the Maine State Liquor Inspector for possession of alcohol by a minor behind Clason House. She was also referred to the Dean of Students Office.

9-15-01 - A visitor to the campus was summonsed by a Maine State Liquor Inspector for possession of alcohol by a minor.

9-15-01 - A student was arrested by the Lewiston Police Department for furnishing liquor to minors behind Clason House. The Police were working with the Maine State Liquor Inspectors. The student was also referred to the Dean of Students Office.

9-16-01 - While on patrol at Moulton House, Security found three bottles of hard alcohol. The bottles were confiscated.

9-22-01 - A student was issued a summons for being a minor in possession of alcohol on Frye Street by the Lewiston Police Department. The student was also referred to the Dean of Students Office.


Drug Related Violations

9-09-01 - A student at Page Hall was observed in the first floor hallway holding a water pipe commonly used to smoke marijuana. The Lewiston Police Department was notified. The drug paraphernalia was confiscated along with some marijuana. The student was issued a summons for possession of marijuana by the Lewiston Police Department. He was also referred to the Dean of Students Office.

9-15-01 The Lewiston Police Department responded to Hayes House and confiscated a water pipe commonly used to smoke marijuana. The student was referred to the Dean of Students Office.

9-16-01 - A student at Wilson was summonsed for possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana by the Lewiston Police Department. The student was also referred to the Dean of Students Office.

9-18-01 - A student was observed at Hacker House with a water pipe commonly used to smoke marijuana. The Lewiston Police Department responded and the pipe was confiscated.

9-21-01 - While investigating a noise complaint at Smith Hall South, Security saw a student in the hallway with a glass bong commonly used to smoke marijuana. The Lewiston Police Department was called. The drug paraphernalia was confiscated, and the student was issued a summons for possession of narcotics. The student was also referred to the Dean of Students Office.


Bicycle Theft

9-09-01 - A bike left unlocked outside of Hayes House was reported stolen. The Western Flyer, single speed blue bike was valued at $5.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

9-13-01 - A bike locked to the bike rack at Page Hall was stolen. The gray 21 speed Specialized Rock Hopper was valued at $350.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

UPDATE: Later that afternoon the bike was found at Underhill Arena.

9-19-01 - An unlocked bike was reported stolen from the bike rack at the Ladd Library Terrace. The 21 speed black Cannondale F400 mountain bike was valued at $650.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.

9-22-01 - A bike locked to the stair railing inside Rand Hall was stolen. The green Schwinn was valued at $300.00. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.


Criminal Mischief

9-09-01 - A broken front door assembly was found at Webb House. The plate and latch were found on the floor. The lock assembly was ripped off the door and the mounting hardware was strewn about the doorway. The estimated cost to repair the lock is $391.92. The cost will be charged to the House.

9-15-01 - A fist sized hole was found in the first floor lobby of Rand Hall after a blue-slipped party was held. The damage was estimated at $76.59.

9-16-01 - The glass on the front door of Frye House was broken. The damage was estimated at about $189.96. The House will be charged.

9-18-01 - The glass to the rear door at Frye House was broken. The damage was estimated at about $189.62. The House will be charged.


Criminal Mischief of a Motor Vehicle

9-20-01 - A vehicle parked in front of 31 Campus Avenue received about $30.00 of damage. The low beam headlight on the passenger's side was shattered. The Lewiston Police Department was notified.
